The chief of Dingoni, a farming community in the Tolon district of the Northern region, Naa.Samson Nina Yakubu has called on chiefs, family heads, religious leaders, government, human right protection agencies and all stakeholders to John hands in the fight against child marriage in Ghana.

According to the chief, child marriage is a social issue that need a collaborative effort from all stakeholders in fighting the menace ,adding that, stakeholder intervention, will add a further impetus to the fight against the issue which is prevalent in most remote communities of the country.

Naa Samson Nina Yakubu made call when speaking at a stakeholder meeting with parents and school girls at Tolon in the Northern region. The meeting was organized by NORSAAC an NGO under its project dubbed 'Let the Girls Smile, say no to child marriage' which begun in 2015. Let the Girls Smile, Say No to Child Marriage project is being implemented in two districts of the northern region ,namely Tolon and Mion where the child marriage is said to be escalating.

He observed that, early child marriage especially among school girls in the area was a problem which needs some governmental intervention and strict enforcement of the laws that governs the act.

The chief mentioned ignorance about the health dangers ---troubled pregnancies --- associated with teenagers marrying older men on the part of parents and society as the major challenge affected efforts that are geared towards ending the practice of child marriage in Ghana especially, the three regions of the North.

Parents, he stated need to be educated on the implications ---marital problems ---- of marrying their children early.

He appealed therefore to his colleague chiefs to speak publicly against the practice and be bold to punish and sanction parents who go against the laws the prohibits child marriage in Ghana.

He lamented that, even in this modern era, parents still force their girls to marry men they don't like, explaining that, some parents even go the extra of beating girls who refuses to go by their choice, this he said needs to be stopped.
