Energy Commission To Clamp Down On Unprofessional Electricians

Ghana Energy Commission has stated that they will soon clamp down unprofessional electricians in a bid to prevent fire outbreaks associated with electrical wiring.

The action is in line with the enforcement of the Electrical Wiring Regulation 2011; LI 2008 which require that only electricians certified by Energy Commission can undertake electrical wiring works.

Speaking to Sunyani based radio Ahomka 90.5FM,after a press conference in Sunyani ahead of the enforcement of the regulation, Mr. Victor Owusu, Public Affairs of Energy Commission said they are fully committed to the implementation of the policy.

“In Ghana now as per the Electrical Wiring Regulations 2011 LI 2008 it demands that every electrician will have to be certified by Energy Commission otherwise you can’t do any electrical wiring works in the country.

Speaking on sanctions prescribed by the regulation against uncertified electricians, Mr Victor Owusu said one can be jailed for two years or fined GHS3, 000.

He said a total of 369 electricians in Brong Ahafo region have been awarded with certificates by the Energy Commission,"they have passed Electrical Wiring Certification Examination" he added.

According to Mr. Victor Owusu any facility which is wired by an uncertified electrician will not be connected by the utilities companies(ECG or VRA).

He appealed to all facility owners(Hotels, Houses) especially those seeking to wire their facility to use only CEWP’s.

Meanwhile, Associate Program Officer of Energy Commission,Mr. Stephen Yomoh told Ahomka 90.5FM that,"if service connection is required for a facility not wired by Certified Electrical Wiring Professional Association of Ghana (CEWP), the facility will need to be subjected to a detailed mandatory audit by a CEWI and a CEWP engaged to carry out any connection recommended by the CEWI. The CEWP will then issue the appropriate installation completion Certificate (ICC) to enable the service application to be lodged".

He said over 5000 Certified Electrical Wiring Professional Association of Ghana (CEWP) spread across the nation beginning October 2017 to clamp down on unprofessional electricians, No CEWP, No Electricity Connection " he stated.

"If your house has been wired by a certified professional electricians,you are safe from electric fires and electric shocks" he concluded.
