The Northern regional manager of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Alhaji Abdulai Hindu has advised Ghanaians to attach seriousness to disaster management precautions when putting up homes and other building facilities.

This he noted will help minimize if not prevent the devastating damages that normally accompany disasters in the country.

Alhaji Abdulai Hindu made the observation during a clean up exercise organized by the regional NADMO office to mark the World Disaster Reduction Day Celebration in Tamale.

He counted fire outbreaks, floodings as the main disasters faced by the region.

He lamented that, many of the disasters recorded in the region were due to lack of compliance with safety regulations, and called for attitudinal change.

He also mentioned lack of hygiene, disregard of sanitation and structural collapse as causes of disease epidemics in the region.

He said the world disaster reduction day is celebrated on the 13th of October every year to allow actors in the disaster management to discuss and strategize ways of dealing with disasters.

He stated that, the new NADMO Act 927 of 2016 places emphasizes on shaping the response capabilities on carrying out risk management activities such as awareness creation, identification of hazards and controlling of damages resulting from disasters.

He also said NADMO has been empowered by the law to be part of the processes involve in putting up homes and surveying of sites to help prevent incidents of disasters in the country.

" Am happy that, the constitution has now allowed NADMO to be part of building structures or putting up a building and even citing a land for people to come in, NADMO is now partnered to the town and country planning, the survey department Urban roads, Fiderroads. Before you put up a building, NADMO has to sign for your building permit" Alhaji Hindu noted

He appealed to Ghanaians especially, people in the region to support NADMO in fighting disasters in the country.

He also urged the media to help widen education on disaster prevention and reduction in the country.

World Disaster Reduction Day is observed on October 13, every year to create opportunity for the value chain players to plan on how to manage and control disasters in the world.

The day is also aims at giving NADMO opportunity a platform to assess its chances in disaster reduction and successes choked by the organization.

World Disaster Reduction Day Celebration also allows NADMO to intensify its campaigns on safety measures in Natural Disasters and its prevention.

The Northern regional celebration of the day took place at the Tamale Central Hospital in Tamale.
