Residents of Agona Swedru in the Agona West Municipality of the Central Region last Saturday undertook a 5-hour massive clean up exercise to mark the monthly National Sanitation Day.
Led by the Municipal Co-ordinating Director, Mr. Ishmael Ogyefo and his able officers, the residents cleared choked gutters along the principal streets of the town..
Artisans, staff of Swedru branch of Melcom Group of Companies, Assembly Members, Media practitioners, market women Association, various keep fit clubs, students, drivers, store owners Association and churches took part in the exercise.
The rest include staff of the Environmental Health Department, Zoomlion Company Limited, members of the Agona Swedru branch of the Ghana National Association of the Deaf and transport operators.
Briefing the media later after the exercise, Mr. Ishmael Ogyefo announced that the Assembly has tasked the Environmental Unit to intensify its public education on the need for proper hygiene
According to him the major source of worry to the Assembly was open defecation adding that landlords and caretakers in the municipality had been ordered to provide toilet facilities for their tenants.
He further stated that the Environmental Health Unit of the Assembly has also been tasked to intensify its public education on proper hygienic practices to eradicate firth in the Agona West Municipality.
Mr. George Freeman, the Agona West Municipal Environmental Health Officer, said the Assembly had provided enough rubbish containers for the Agona Swedru township saying there has been regural evacuation of rubbish to the dumping sites.
He commended staff of the Environmental Health Unit and Zoomlion Company Ltd for their dedication to duty especially during observation of the Monthly National Sanitation Day.
The Agona West Municipal Information Officer, Mr. Charles Nkrumah noted that plans were far advanced for the clean up exercise to be conducted twice in every month to reduce environmental related diseases.
