Accra In Two Days: So Pathetic For A Country That Should Know Better!
10.10.2017 LISTEN

Ghana’s capital, Accra can be summed up in just two simple words: so pathetic. This is easily arrived at in just two days. It is sad for a country that just spent detestably farce characters, thinking and money to celebrate her 60th birthday, a country that just paraded some people as tourism ambassadors and has it MASLOC program hijacked by parliamentarians whose identity are more revered and sacred than the ‘Akrokari’ shrine that they cannot be named and shamed.

The first was the heavy downpour that got the city flooded this past Friday putting lives in danger, affecting productivity, as a result of delayed or cancelled good business deals and schools going on a break because major roads were unmotorable. This is the same country that experienced the black Wednesday which is still a scar or perhaps to borrow the word of Kojo Antwi, will forever be a tattoo on our historical conscience.

Several others have happened before and I remember a point in time a president then had to disguise himself and ride on an expensive motorbike and to do what loyalists described as self-assessment and first hand encounter of the situation sparking controversy. You will wonder if something productive came out of that pursuit.

The day before it was reported in the dailies that fire has gutted the GMA office building and all documents dating from 2012 have been lost to the fire, there was a supposedly EOCO probe.

Then this Saturday we had another deadly shock of inferno as a country in a vicinity where a good friend of mine stays and the same area where we attended a mate’s wedding exactly a week ago. The said location is bordered strategically by institutions and where our PRESECAN brothers just held their gracious homecoming. Another tragic gas explosion that fired up social media like the explosion itself. Unfortunately, I only woke up to see the trend and missed calls from family and friends, obviously calling to find out if I was safe.

I want to believe we have also not forgotten a similar gas explosion that happened in Madina a year or two ago. Nothing seems absolutely right and never does ‘never again’ have ‘erotic arousal’ in the conscience of those hands we have entrusted our state welfare into. It is always about politics without common sense and uncommon thinking.

For the downpour, what surprised me most was the glaring water gushing out of the holes of the city’s luxurious high rise buildings just to fill the roads.

Why can’t we just commit to fixing this country once and for all and stop the siphoning of state money to satisfy our lavish lifestyle and high cost of living? Why can’t we as citizens move from being angry to being furious and work out our own magic? To borrow from the UN and international donors why can’t we just ‘extremely reduce’ our greed and self-centredness?

Maybe I should simply see myself only as a bird in flight and an obvious caution to not give too much of my love to this city for its sham leadership. Like someone inquired, I hope the mayor is still not that bearded lawless Dutch-originated Martin Luther King Jnr. and the president, not the one on the one-this one-that freebies.
