No driving licence for those without formal education-VELD

Techiman (B/A), June 23, GNA- The Vehicle Examination and Licensing Division (VELD) of the Ministry of Roads and Transport will as from the year 2008 not issue licences to persons without formal education to instil discipline among drivers.

Mr Isaac Leh, Techiman Municipal Assistant VELD Officer, disclosed at a joint general meeting of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) main and cargo number one branch at Techiman. He said VELD in conjunction with the police would soon mount road spot checks for the examination of vehicles for their roadworthiness and appealed to vehicle owners to secure road-worthiness certificates.

Mr Kofi Kokwa, Brong Ahafo Regional Chairman GPRTU of TUC advised drivers against alcoholism, drug abuse and wrong overtaking, which often caused accidents. Mr Kokwa, who is also the Techiman Municipal Chairman of the Union, expressed regret about the many accidents that occurred during funerals and appealed to drivers to desist from unnecessary antics on the death

of a colleague. Mr Kwadwo Sewiri, Vice Chairman of the Union called on members to be disciplined and to report drunken drivers and bookmen to the Union for sanctioning.
