Debt Cancellation Is A Victory For Good Governance

H.E. Mr. Isaac Osei, Ghana's High Commissioner to the UK has hailed the decision of the industrialised countries to write of some off some of Ghana's debts as a victory for good governance.

He said the decision was also a recognition of the sound economic policies being pursued by the Government of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) led by President J.A. Kufuor, which had restored macro-economic stability aimed at ultimately creating wealth and prosperity for Ghanaians

Speaking at the fifth anniversary celebration of Ashanti Newtown Club of UK, Mr. Osei said Ghanaians should feel proud of their government for scoring high marks within the international community and urged them to continue to support the socio-economic measures which had been instituted to lay a solid foundation for future generations of Ghanaians

The celebration provided the opportunity for the club to raise funds in aid of hospitals in the Kumasi Metropolis, especially the Manhyia Hospital for which an amount of C100,000,000.oo would be raised for the provision of water.

Present at the well-attended event were leading luminaries including Dr. K. Kyei Mensah, a medical practitioner who chaired the event, Mrs. Elena Weston, a philanthropist and a patron of the club, representatives of Ghanaian community associations, opinion leaders and friends of Ghana.

At the event twenty-two members of the club including Mr. Kofi Poku Edusei and Nana Owusu Sekyere, Chairman and Secretary respectively of the club and Mrs. Weston were presented with commemorative plaques for their commitment and dedication towards the growth of the club.

Mr. Osei thanked the founding fathers of the club for their foresight and dedication which had transformed it into an enviable body in the UK.

High Commissioner Osei also spoke on the need for Ghanaians to take advantage of educational opportunities in the UK and encourage their children to take their education seriously in order to prepare them for leadership roles in the future.

Dr. Kyei Mensah hoped that the association would continue to fund projects which would improve the living conditions of their compatriots in Kumasi and urged them to consider investing some of their earnings into the productive sectors of the economy.
