Drivers Threaten Protests Over Amended Tow Levy

Drivers and Car Owners in the country have registered their displeasure over the new amended pay as you go tow levy proposed by Parliament.

”We will echo our displeasure on the new pay as you go system and go to the table with President Akufo Addo to reconsider most of the details in the policy or else we will hit the streets to demonstrate”

Government earlier had ordered for a change in the mandatory tow levy which was expected to kick off last last June after series of backlash from Ghanaians.

Speaking in an interview with OTEC fm’s Evans Agyei Sikapa, spokesperson for the Drivers and Car Owners Association, Francis Appiah described the new pay as you go tow system which is yet to be implemented as a killer policy which cannot be accepted.

He says a careful study of the proposal from Parliament shows that it will be a hard knock on them as the amount to be paid by drivers as levy is too much.

“How can one pay GHc800 as towing and recovery fees for the shortest distance,” he fumed.

According to him, the proposal also states that failure to pay for a towed vehicle’s retrieval after a month would give the towing agency the power to sell the vehicle.

”To say that you will sell my car if i am unable to pay my tow levy after just 30 days is unheard of. I have never witnessed anything like this in a life time,” he wondered.

“On what basis should the road safety commission sell someone’s vehicle after just a month of failure to pay the towing fee, ” he argued.

He believes the move is a smart way government is using to force them into accepting the rejected mandatory towing system, but vows that it will not see the light of day.
