How President Akufo-Addo Can Boost Investor-Confidence In Ghana

After his 7th January, 2017, swearing-in by the then Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Mrs. Georgina Wood, President Akufo-Addo acted quickly to ensure that he was compliant with Ghana's assets declaration laws - PUBLIC OFFICE HOLDERS (DECLARATION OF ASSETS AND DISQUALIFICATION) ACT - 1998 (ACT 550).

If we don't eliminate high-level corruption from our country, it will destroy our nation as sure as day follows night. From our recent history, there is no question that it would make a huge difference to the fight against high-level corruption in Ghana, were the president to surprise the nation by publicly publishing his assets - as well as those of the First Lady and all President Akufo-Addo's offspring too.

To show Ghanaians and the rest of the world that at long last Africa's trendsetter, Ghana, is bringing positive change to governance in the continent this blog humbly recommends such a course of action to the president and his nuclear family - if they have nothing to hide that is - as it will put Ghana on the world map yet again for all the right reasons. Doubtless many in his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will move heaven and earth to dissuade him from such a move - but he must never forget that it is him that history will judge.

His advisors and all those in his inner-circle will be mere footnotes when his presidency is chronicled by historians across the globe decades hence. Obviously, no one who is sane, discerning and patriotic, expects Ghana's leader to introduce rule by saints in our homeland Ghana.

However, if President Akufo-Addo publicly publishes his assets and those of his wife and children, virtually all his ministers will have to follow suit - as will all those he appoints to upper-echelon public-sector positions. Above all, by publicly publishing his assets and those of his dear wife, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, and all his children, President Akufo-Addo will cement his reputation as a truly radical and honest politician in the Nkrumah-mould - and reassure ordinary Ghanaians that at long last they have actually elected a leader who has shown by deeds, not words, that he did not come to acquire riches by stealth: at the expense of Mother Ghana. And it is pretty certain that it will also boost investor-confidence in Ghana. Cool.
