The Chief Executive Officer of JBC1 Ltd, a leading real estate development company in Ghana, Mr Mohammed Jibril, has appealed to both private and public enterprise to extend support to needy girls, popularly known as kayayei.

He made this call at a short ceremony in Accra to support the Pamela Bridgewater program that is working to provide vocational skill training and accommodation facilities to the disadvantaged girls.

“Do we ask ourselves where these girls sleep at night? He asked rhetorically, and he went on to add that their plight at night is worrying especially during the rainy seasons when they are at the mercy of the weather together with their beautiful and vulnerable children.

“There is no better way for institutions and philanthropists to show their spirit of humanity than extending support to the Kayayei and I therefore urge all to show compassion to these hardworking girls”.

Mr Jibril suggested that “providing training to the girls is a way of preventing the cycle of poverty since the skills they acquire would enable them to become economically viable, especially against men who want to take advantage of them”.

Mr Jibril who toured the Kayayei Vocational Center at Abenase and the accommodation facility at Mamobi, near the Sulemana Memorial Hospital also donated 20,000 cedis to support the Pamela Bridgewater Project. His wife, Mrs Amida Jibril, in the spirit of womanhood, donated sanitary pad to the Kayayei after demonstrating it usage to the girls.

The Pamela Bridgewater project provides future and welfare to needy girls and children through education, training, advocacy, protection and research. Ms Pamela Bridgewater was a former USA Ambassador to Ghana, who endured her public and private life to campaign for the girl-child.
