Kumasi, Sept 22, GNA - An appeal has been made to the government to renovate and retool a blacksmithing workshop left abandoned at the Kwaso Rural Development College in the Ejisu-Juaben Municipality.
The facility had been built in the early 1980's to train craftsmen to fabricate farming implements and other vital tools.
Mr. Kwame Adjei, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Association of Blacksmiths, said it was deeply upsetting to allow it to rot - the huge investment go to complete waste.
He was speaking during an inspection of the facility by members of the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons.
They were there to apprise themselves of the state of affairs, to make appropriate recommendations to the government.
Mr. Adjei said the facility could be important to the implementation of the one-district one-factory policy by way of the manufacture of vital supplies.
He asked for strong support for the blacksmiths, pointing that, there were a lot they could help to produce locally - auto parts, handcuffs, hospital beds, screens and agricultural equipment.
Mr. Jones Applerh, Executive Secretary, renewed the call to them to refrain from the manufacture of small arms, many of these were often used to carry out violent crimes including robbery.
He also underlined the need for the blacksmiths to be organized into a stronger national association for self-regulation - to make sure that the right things were done.
The Commission later visited the Regional Police Headquarters to have fair idea of the crime rate and unlawful arms possession in the region.
