Accra, Sept. 13, (dpa/GNA) - Hundreds of (EU) citizens, backed by trade unions and other groups, planned to lobby lawmakers and stage a rally in central London on Wednesday to urge the protection EU citizens' rights in Britain and British citizens' rights in the European Union.

The organizers, led by The 3 Million group, want to "fully protect our rights after Brexit, so we can stay in the countries we love."

A mass lobby will allow "EU citizens and their British family and friends, along with British citizens living in other EU countries, to meet with their MP in parliament to raise their concerns and tell their own story," it said.

The group said it expects some 5,000 people to join a rally in Trafalgar Square in central London early Wednesday evening.

Ahead of the "day of action," it published an open letter to the British government and the European Union backed by businesses, public sector organizations, trade unions, universities and charities supporting its campaign.

The letter urged Britain and the EU to reach a separate agreement on citizens' rights "so people are protected even if there is no deal on Brexit," and guarantee that the rights of British and EU citizens "will be fully and permanently guaranteed under international law and jurisdiction."

Unison, one of Britain's biggest trade unions, said it will back the events on behalf of the estimated 70,000 Unison members who are among some 3 million EU citizens living in the country.
