Mahama Is A Shameless Liar On Mills
07.09.2017 LISTEN

When former President John Dramani Mahama says that he misses his former benefactor and boss, to wit, the late President John Evans Atta-Mills, the man he claims insultingly made him a presidential “spare tire,” it has to be taken with a pinch of salt (See “I Miss Atta-Mills – Mahama” Starrfmonline.com / Ghanaweb.com 7/25/17). One only has to recall his gut reaction, as it were, and the first public statement that then-Vice-President Mahama made in the wake of the death of his former boss to give the lie to such patent canard.

You see, the man did not even formally announce the passing of then-President Atta-Mills, let alone lament his death or even extend his condolences to the Mills Clan and its allied families, friends and associates. Instead, the then-Vice-President Mahama began his speech by rapturously celebrating the “inscrutable wisdom of Divine Providence” that had so auspiciously and perfectly facilitated the opportune liquidation of his boss in order to help him make history as the first Ghanaian leader to have been born after the landmark date of March 6, 1957.

It made one wonder whether such an obscene attitude was a unique peculiarity of Gonja culture, or simply that the man had a hand in the sudden death of his boss, in spite of the fact that the former law professor at the country’s flagship academy, the University of Ghana, had been known to have been terminally indisposed for quite some time prior to his demise. Couple the preceding with the media details regarding the bizarre circumstances under which a dead or dying Prof. Atta-Mills had been transported to the 37th Military Hospital, and matters could not be even more suspicious.

We have also reliably learned that at the time of his passing, the then-President Atta-Mills had ordered an enquiry into the widely alleged shady dealings of his Vice-President regarding the purchase of some aircraft from Brazil, a sizeable amount of the money involved in the purchase of which could not be accounted for by the protagonist of this column. The Akufo-Addo Administration may very well need to investigate the veracity of this allegation and help put matters to rest, especially coming at a time during which the country was in dire straits.

I have this before and hereby reiterate the same: that if, indeed, Mr. Mahama cared about the memory of his predecessor, he would not have comfortably occupied the Flagstaff House while the tomb of his former boss rapidly lapsed into abject disrepair. The fact of the matter is that former President John Dramani Mahama is an ever-scheming political opportunist whose primary care and allegiance are indisputably to himself. It is also rather annoying to hear the former Rawlings Communication Minister claim that the late President Mills had been a “humble” and an “inclusive” leader who worked studiously to reduce the level of partisan rancor and bitterness in the country.

Maybe that is only relative to the “revolutionary” or radical mean-spiritedness of Messrs. Jerry John Rawlings and Dramani Mahama. The fact of the matter is that you are not inclusive when you line up the cabinet appointees of your predecessor and have them prosecuted in court on the basis of sheer animosity, rather than the discovery of any forensically sustainable evidence of corruption. There is also more than ample evidence regarding the relentless persecution of the ideological opponents of the key operatives of the erstwhile Rawlings-led Provisional National Defense Council (PNDC), the direct antecedent of the Rawlings-minted National Democratic Congress (NDC); so it is not clear what Mr. Mahama means by the late President Atta-Mills’ having boldly and courageously attempted to facilitate the drastic abatement of some “partisan differences” that were tearing Ghana apart.

What kind of nonsensical talk is this? Especially, when one reckons the fact that Mr. Mahama had vigorously campaigned for the presidency, twice, on the basis of Northern Tribalism against the Akan majority populace of the country.
