Students to broaden their horizon under the 'Sharks Competition'

Accra, Aug. 16, GNA - Africa Schools Online, a platform that helps students to make informed career choices, has launched a quiz competition dubbed: 'The Sharks' to discover and inspire young ones to improve on their learning capabilities.

'The Sharks' within the second cycle institutions, refers to brilliant students who are able to grasp what is being taught without any difficulty.

The annual high school Shark Quiz competition, therefore, aims at providing an exciting, creative and competitive avenue for intellectual display in a televised program.

It would also provide an opportunity for students to show their scholarly abilities in Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics and develop academic portfolios that would make them excel in their education.

Dr. Kwabena B.Tandoh, the President of Tandoh Associates, said it was high time teachers, government and institutions created a world of possibilities for students to enable them to explore to improve on their talents.

He said teachers had to accept the realities of the current educational sector and prepare students accordingly having their own future development in mind as teachers.

Dr Tandoh said in order to enhance students' performance, there was the need for them to employ collaborative skills in and out of the classroom, understand the fundamentals of good communication, and be curious, innovative, and creative.

He said the nation could not be content with the average performance of students if she wanted to train good doctors, nurses, engineers, and scientists among other professionals.

'The Sharks quiz competition has, therefore, come at the right time to enable students to discover themselves and explore more,' he said.

Dr Tandoh said there must be an upgrading in skills and capacity development of students to enable them to graduate from the basic to the senior high and the tertiary level to unearth their potentials.

He it was apt for the Government to put structures in place to aid teachers out of training colleges to evaluate their performances from time to time to ensure professional growth.

Mr Abel Ohene Acquaye, the Executive Director of Africa Schools Online, said Ghana was doing well in the sciences but needed to do more to bridge the education gap.

He said the competition would provide a platform for students to appreciate the diverse core subjects and make informed choices.

He said 16 schools would be drawn from both the public and private institutions for the competition, which would be in four rounds.

It would be held on October 20-21, 2017 at the International Students Guest Centre and the finals in December at the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Mr Acquaye urged students not to see the Sharks Competition as another National Maths and Science Quiz but use it broaden their horizon and be more knowledgeable about the things around them.
