HFC Bank says it has initiated a process of outsourcing its drivers and making their jobs legally severed as part of its rearrangement measures.

“We have informed the staff and the Union of our intentions and are engaging them in discussions to mitigate the effect of the severance and to pay the affected staff what is due them in line with Section 65 of Labour Act, 2003 Act 651.

“Our consultants are guiding us to enable us have a mutually beneficial process,” the bank indicated in a press statement issued yesterday in Accra and signed by Festus Matey, Manager, Corporate Communications.

Even though Matey added that only 54 drivers were being outsourced and not 250 reported by the media, unconfirmed sources noted that the services of tellers or cashiers were also been outsourced.

However, the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU), has called on management of the bank to stop outsourcing the work of its members, which was coming on the heels of unionization and rather complete the verification form which was served on management for a ridiculous period of two months without receiving management's final position to enable the Chief Labour Officer issue the collective bargaining certificate (CBC).

In a letter to management of HFC Bank signed by Solomon Kotei, General Secretary recently, the ICU said HFC's management was “ostensibly resorting to anti-union tactics to discourage and frustrate workers from joining the union.”

“Your employees have exercised their rights under the 1992 Constitution of Ghana and the Labour Act 2003 (Act 651) and have indeed joined the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) for which the process of unionization is almost complete.

“Information reaching us indicates that management is bent on carrying out its decision to outsource the drivers in spite of our objection to it on the basis that such a move amounts to union busting tactics.

“We hope management would not do anything to jeopardize the social relationship we are building for our mutual benefit.”
