Accra, July 25, GNA - The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) says reports reaching it indicate that bags of government's subsidised fertiliser are being smuggled to Burkina Faso and Togo.

Some members of the fertiliser security watchdog committee set up by the Association said the commodity could be seen in some shops located on the border towns that shared boundary with Ghana.

A statement issued in Accra by Ms Victoria Adongo, Programme Coordinator of PFAG, said the development was unfortunate and would disadvantage Ghanaian farmers if the practice was not checked and stopped.

It said in view of this, the Association urged state actors and the security agencies along the borders to be take more practical and proactive steps to address the situation.

'We are of the view that, if our security agencies work closely with our watchdog members, the situation can be brought under control,' it added.

The statement said all should help curb the smuggling of fertiliser across neighbouring countries and secure it for the Ghanaian farmer only.

It said the fertiliser watchdog committee members would continue to monitor the movement of the subsidised fertilisers across neighbouring countries and report such perpetrators to the security agencies for arrest and prosecution.

The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) is the apex Farmer-Based Non-Governmental Organisation in Ghana with the mandate to advocate for pro poor agriculture and trade policies and other issues that affect the livelihoods of small holder farmers. GNA
