Agogo (Ash), July 21, GNA - Small-scale businesses have called for strong support by the government to aid optimal operation and growth.

Mr. Jerry Blankson, the Asante-Akim North District Chairman of the Association of Small-Scale Industries (ASSI), said they should substantially benefit from the stimulus package for the private sector.

The association - made up mainly of artisans has been playing vital role in job and wealth creation.

Speaking at its meeting in Agogo, Mr. Blankson indicated that they had been making significant contribution to the revenue of the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

He, however, said this notwithstanding, they had been left on their own with little or no push by the government.

He asked that things radically changed to help them to expand their businesses.

The support could come in the form of the supply of equipment, machinery and other incentive packages, he added.

Mr. Blankson said ASSI such assistance would enable them to train more young people in various trades and vocations to reduce unemployment.

He spoke of plans to switch to the use of solar energy for their operations and said the leadership was already in talks with some companies to design solar panels that met the power needs of the members and affordable.

The initiative, he stated, would cut down the cost of doing business.

Mrs. Ophelia Yeboah, the Deputy Chairperson, advised the members to register their businesses to enable them to bid for district assembly contracts.

She encouraged all artisans and other small-scale businesses to join the association and said the benefits were enormous.
