Police hunt for armed robbers

Accra, May 30, GNA - The Police are hunting for four armed robbers who undertook a series of robberies on Sunday at Awudome Estate and Airport in Accra.

Briefing journalists in Accra on Monday, Assistant Superintendent of Police Jordan Quaye, Public Relations Officer, Regional Police Headquarters, said the four persons, armed with pistols and knives, robbed a taxi cab with registration number GR 2603 W from its owner to begin their nefarious acts.

ASP Quaye said in the first incident, three, out of the four men who were in the cab robbed one Robert Wilson of his mobile phone and 350,000 cedis at Awudome Estate at about 2230 hours on Sunday. The PRO said Wilson was walking along the road when he received a call.

Soon after, three robbers pulled out pistols and knives on him. A struggle ensued between Wilson and the robbers and they smashed a pistol on his mouth, resulting in the loss of one tooth.

The robbers managed to flee but Wilson threw a stone at their cab, which hit the front windscreen.

ASP Quaye said the same robbers then crossed an Indian national at Awudome Estate and robbed him of his car leaving the cab behind. The same gang drove to the Airport where it robbed a man of his laptop computer.

According to the PRO, the gang went on to rob a woman of her mobile phone and a handbag, which contents are not yet known. The taxi cab, ASP Quaye said, had been towed to Kaneshie Police Station adding the owner had identified it and reported how his car was snatched from him. 30 May 05
