Tema, May 29, GNA- About 200 youth in Tema Municipality on Saturday underwent voluntary counselling and testing for HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, during a general health screening exercise at Tema Community One.

The exercise, which was conducted by the Excell Foundation, a non -governmental organisation in collaboration with the Ghana Aids Commission, was aimed at encouraging the youth to seek early medical attention when they fall ill.

It was on the theme: "The Youth Taking Charge Of Our Health". Nurses drawn from the Tema General Hospital, screened and treated about 400 people from sickness like menstrual pains, headaches, malaria, toothaches, and abdominal pains and pain in the testicles. Some of them were referred for further medical attention. Mrs Cecilia Hughes Osafo, Programme Coordinator of the Foundation asked the people to observe personal and environmental cleanliness. She advised the youth against alcoholism, which she said triggers the desire for sex.
