Wa, June 27, GNA - Orthodox Muslims in Wa on Monday held Eidul Fitre prayers at Wa-Na Sidiki's Park to mark the end of Ramadam.

The Muslims who were led in an open prayer by Alhaji Dr Sulemana Harun Mahama Bakure, Chief Iman's Representative, urged Muslims to maintain peace at all times to enhance development.

He prayed to Allah to bestow on the leadership of the country, perfect physical and mental health, as well as tranquillity to achieve successes and prosperity for the citizenry.

Mr Sulemana Alhassan, Upper West Regional Minister who graced the occasion called on Muslims to support government in its fight against illegal mining which was destroying the environment and eco-system.

He said the wanton destruction of the environment by illegal miners would cause drought and hunger to further perpetuate poverty among the people, especially those in the north which had less vegetative cover and one rainy season.

He also bemoaned the menace of open defecation in the region, which could cause cholera, diarrhea and intestinal worm infection among the people in the communities.

The Regional Minister advised the general public to desist from the practice which might result in the death of children less than five years who were vulnerable.

He said government had pledged to transform the country through various policies such as 'Planting for Food and Job', 'Zongo Inner City Development Fund', 'One-District, One-Factory' among others.

On education, Mr Alhassan said it was very important for parents to take good care of their children's education through proper utilisation of resources.

He urged Muslims to encourage sharing among people of other faith especially the poor and the needy to help establish bond of unity and co-existence with people in the region.
