Tamale, June 19, GNA - Madam Francisca Awuni, Headmistress of the Bagabaga Demonstration 'B' Primary School, has expressed worry over the lack of reading materials, which is affecting teaching and learning in the school.
Madam Awuni, who was speaking at a reading clinic and donation exercise organised by MTN-Ghana, said many of the children are good at reading but the inadequacy of reading materials and the lack of funds to buy the materials has been a worry.
She expressed her gratitude to MTN for the support and appealed for more assistance to complete the building of their Information and Communication Technology (ICT) laboratory as well as furnishing it to cater for the school's population of 647 pupils.
Madam Awuni also appealed to the group and other charitable organisations to assist in the provision of a toilet and urinal for the school to help curb the indiscriminate defecation by pupils behind the school.
Mr Collins Adjei, Territory Sales Controller at Northern Regional branch of MTN, said as part of MTN's Social Corporate Responsibility effort, it instituted the '21 days of Y'ello Care' 10 years ago, where staff volunteered annually to render service to the society from the 1st to the 21st of June.
He said the theme for this year's event: 'Investing in Education for All', has informed their decision to scout for schools with inadequate reading materials and help establish reading clubs as well as donate reading materials to the selected schools.
Staff of the Northern Regional office of MTN assisted the pupils to identify alphabets and interacted with them.
Mr Timothy Oscar Baba, Circuit Supervisor for the Sagnarigu District Education Unit, said many schools in the district face similar challenges in reading because funds given to the school by government was not enough to cater for their problems.
Mr Baba expressed gratitude to the MTN Group for the assistance and expressed the hope that more schools in the district would benefit from such interventions.
