Ex-Prez Mahama remembers late Maj. Mahama on Father's Day

18 June 2017 | Politics

Former President, John Mahama, has dedicated today's Fathers Day to late Major Maxwell Adam Mahama, the military man who was killed in the line of duty at Denkyira-Boase in the Central Region.

The former President tweeted, “dedicating this Fathers Day to Maj. Max Mahama & all servicemen who’ve fallen in the line of duty & their children robbed of daddy’s joy.”

Major Mahama, an officer of the 5th Infantry Battalion, was lynched and partly burnt by some youth of Denenkyira-Obuasi in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central Region on Monday, May 29, 2017, on suspicion that he was an armed robber.

He was subsequently laid to rest on June 9.
His death has since rekindled the debate on mob justice, and the need to stem it.

He left behind a wife and two children.
Father's Day is celebrated to honour fathers and the influence of fathers in society.

The celebration was brought by the Spanish and Portuguese to Latin America, where March 19 is often still used for it, though many countries in Europe and the Americas have adopted the U.S. date, which is the third Sunday of June.

It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in the months of March or May.

Although it is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide, many countries, including Ghana, observe the day on the third Sunday in June.
