Farmer attacked by wild dogs

Nsuapemso (E/R), May 19, GNA - A 40-year-old farmer and mother of nine children has been attacked by three dogs belonging to a mining company at Nsuapemso, near Osino, in the Fanteakwa District on May 8. The farmer, Madam Abena Honya who narrated her ordeal to the Ghana News Agency on her hospital bed at the Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital, said on that day she and her seven-year-old son, Mawuli, set off for their farm to harvest some food stuffs.

She said on the way, the dogs belonging to the Narawa Mining Company and attacked them but Mawuli managed to escape.

The three dogs chased and brought her down and inflicted several wounds on her left arm, legs and buttocks.

Madam Honya said a report was made to the officials of the company who took her to the Akyem Tafo Government Hospital where she was admitted for three days and was discharged to continue dressing of the wounds at the Osino Health Centre.

She said her condition worsened a day after she was discharged and was taken to the Holy Family Hospital where she is on admission. When Mr Ben Klutse, the Chief Security Co-ordinator of the mining company, said the company imported the dogs two-and-half years ago to maintain security at the mines that had been shut down for sometime now. He said the dogs had been confined in a bamboo cage but on that day, they came out through a hole they dug under the cage without the knowledge of the company staff, hence the attack on the woman. Mr Klutse said he took the woman in his car to the Akyem Tafo Hospital and had borne all the medical expenses worth about 500,000 cedis, and that the company was prepared to pay compensation to Madam Honya when she fully recovered.

He said a day after the incident the youth in the town, led by the chief, and attacked the dogs with guns and cutlasses. They shot and killed one of them and inflicted a deep cut on the waist of another. Records at the Osino Police Station confirmed the incident. The guard of the dogs is assisting the police in their investigations.
