The council of the University of Ghana will decide the fate of Prof Kwadwo Asenso-Okyere as the vice-chancellor on Thursday, May 26, 2005.

The University Council met on Monday, May 16, 2005 to discuss a petition by the vice-chancellor against the council's decision to “terminate” his appointment.

After Monday's meeting, which was chaired by the chancellor, Oyeeman Wereko Ampem ll, the University Council decided to give Prof Asenso-Okyere more time to fully react to some pertinent issues that the council addressed to him to enable the members to conclude their discussion on his petition at the next meeting.

High-ranking council members would not be drawn into any discussions when the paper contacted them on telephone to seek explanation on some of the decisions taken at Monday's meeting and other pertinent issues that had engaged the attention of the university community and the public in recent times.

However, observers say the latest development is an indication that the University Council might offer the vice-chancellor a lifeline by reviewing its decision to remove him from his post.

The University Council, in a letter dated May 6, 2005, signed by its chairman, Mr Ishmael Yamson, asked Prof Asenso-Okyere to proceed on leave with effect from June 1, 2005, and, in addition take his sabbatical leave.

That meant Prof Aseso-Okyere would not return to post before his term of office as vice-chancellor expired on September 30, 2006.
