Unite To Lift Alma Mater – University Of Cape Coast Vice Chancellor

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Professor Joseph Ghartey Ampiah has called for a greater collaboration between universities and their alumni to build excellent an academic community for effective teaching and learning.

He made this call when he delivered the keynote address at the Inauguration and 2017 Alumni Congress of the United States of America branch of the University of Cape Coast Alumni Association (UCCAA-USA), which was held on 27th May 2017 at Ramada BWI Airport/Arundel Mills Hotel in Hanover, Maryland, USA.

Speaking of the theme “The Role of Alumni in Contemporary Times,” Professor Ampiah mentioned that the universities all over the world recognize the contributions that alumni are making towards their alma mater, and this makes it imperative for the universities to cooperate with the alumni to build sustainable and growing institutions.

The Vice Chancellor noted that the alumni could create opportunities for strategic partnership for the university by initiating affiliations with the employers, organizations and partners they work or associate with. He was also of the view that the alumni could serve as brand ambassadors and improve the reputation of the UCC.

The occasion, which was graced by Mr. E.B. Asare- Asiedu, Ag. Head of Mission, and Mrs. Akosua Okyere-Badoo, Minister-Economic, both of the Ghana Embassy, USA, saw UCC alumni that span from 1969 to 2015 graduating year groups coming together to build the UCCAA-USA.

Solomon Faakye, Coordinator of Institutional Advancement, UCC also highlighted the five-point strategy of the Alumni Relations. They include creating international Alumni Associations; stratifying alumni into five generations (1960&70s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000-2010, &2010-2017); engaging each stratum according to their needs and interest; identifying the “Forgotten Alumni” (alumni we have never reached) and reach out to them; and advocating for inclusion of alumni engagement in overall university strategic policy and trust.

During the 2017 Alumni Congress, which attracted UCC alumni from all over the United States, a Board of Directors for the Association, led by Professor Kobina Armoo, a former UCC Students Representative Council President, was ushered into office to steer the affairs of the group for the next three years. The eight-member Board of Directors include, Prof. Grace Lartey, Vice President; Mr. Opare Ayisi, Communications Director, Dr. Henry Amedeker, Dep. Communications Director, Mr. Sampson Kumi Tete, Finance Director; Dr. Ras Acolatse, Events/Programs Director; Mr. Daniel Owusu, Dep. Events/Programs Director and Mr. Solomon Kwaku Ahenkan Ntiamoah, Chief technology Officer. In his acceptance speech, Prof. Kobina Armoo gave the assurance that his team will help build a formidable of alumni association in the USA, with the aim of bringing alumni together and helping to UCC become the first choice for students and parents considering university education in Ghana.

The next congress of the Association has been scheduled for the Memorial Day weekend on Saturday, May 26, 2018.
