MTN Y'ello Care Programme refurbishes Street Academy School Building

Accra, June 6, GNA - MTN Ghana as part of its 21 days Y'ello Care Programme will refurbish the Street Academy building with a study area, computers and books.

The Y'ello Care initiative is an annual staff volunteer programme that involves community services that runs across the MTN Group footprint from June 1 to June 21. It was instituted 10 years ago and has grown to become one of the key activities on the MTN calendar.

This Year's programme on the theme: 'Investing in Education for All' would give MTN staff another opportunity to brighten lives through work.

Mrs Cynthia Lumor, the Corporate Services Executive, MTN, speaking at the launch of the 2017 edition of the Programme, said every year; 'we select a theme to drive the activities and for the past five years we have focused on investing in education for all, and this year is no different'.

She said an important aspect of the theme was its focus on education driven by technology; adding 'and with the rapid advance in technology and increasing digitization, management of MTN believe that infusing technology into the educational system could help bridge the development gap and extend educational opportunities to students in underserved communities'.

She said in line with the theme and keenly aware of the importance of technology, MTN volunteers would undertake various activities to promote education and encourage the use of technology during the 21 days of Y'ello Care.

The activities to be undertaken include reading clinics in selected schools across the three business districts - South East, South West and Northern Business Districts- and MTN staff in all three business districts would be involved in reading, storytelling, writing and drawing at St. Francis of Assisi Primary and JHS Suyani, Bagabaga Demonstration School, Tamale and Community Special vocational school at Kumasi.

Others include Presec and Kwashieman cluster of schools, Accra, Tarkwa Cluster of Schools, Manford cluster of schools and Essikado Cluster of Schools.

Mrs Lumor said MTN volunteers would also hold capacity training for teachers in selected special schools and create a common area for teachers at Dzorwulu Special School, Garden City Special School and Wa School for the Blind.

'We will be making available online supplementary reading materials for La Nativity Presby Basic School, Ridge JHS in Tamale, Adako Jachie M/A Primary School in Kumasi, Anafo Bisi Primary and JHS in Bongo, Aggrey Memorial SHS in Cape Coast and Baaglo Binen JHS in the Volta Region,' She added.

She expressed the hope that by embarking on these projects across Ghana, the Company would be helping to improve teaching and learning in schools.

'Having won the Y'ello Care Challenge twice in 2010 and 2011, we believe we are poised to once again win the challenge for the third time as we commemorate the 10th anniversary of MTN Ghana Foundation,' she said.

Ataa Lartey, Director of the Academy, expressed gratitude to management of MTN Ghana for their support to continue to promote quality education in the country.

He used the opportunity to introduce some students, who were contributing to the development of the country in various sectors of the economy like sports.
