Kumasi, May 16, GNA- In line with the strategic plan of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) a two-day workshop on law enforcement and its impact on road safety has been organised in Kumasi. It brought together the law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders responsible for the enforcement of traffic and motor regulations to exchange ideas on how to reduce the high incidence of motor accidents.
The participants were drawn from the Motor, Transport and Traffic Unit of the Police, Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, Judicial Service, Ghana Bar Association and NRSC attended the workshop, organised by the NRSC and the Ministry of Roads and Transport. Mr Magnus Opare-Asamoah, Deputy Minister of Roads and Transport, expressed concern about the high incidence of road traffic accidents in the Ashanti Region, leading to fatalities.
He said the region had received an unenviable reputation as being the area with the highest record of accidents especially on the Konongo-Ejisu road. Mr Noble Appiah, Executive Secretary of NRSC, said during the first quarter of the year, 348 people died, while 2,888 were injured through road accidents.
He said 25 per cent of pedestrians who died in such accidents were children and called on stakeholders to take stringent measures that would help reduce over-speeding, drunk driving and other negative attitudes of drivers which often resulted in fatal incidents. 16 May 05
