Home economics is about healthy living

Winneba (C/R) June 1, GNA - Ms Comfort Madah Kutum, Head of Home Economics Department of the University of Education Winneba (UEW), has noted that home economics is not all about cooking, sewing and maintaining the home.

She said the subject was also about helping people to avoid health risks and to gain skills.

She noted that the course was not limited to people who could not make it in the Basic Education Certificate Examination.

Ms Madah Kutum, said this in an interview with Ghana News Agency at an end of year exhibition in cake decoration and sugar craft, clothing and textiles as well as floral designed by level 300 students of the Entrepreneurship Education of the Department.

The event was part of end of the second semester activities the Department and it was commemorated with fashion show by level 400 and 300 students.

According to Ms Kutum the day was set aside to showcase the knowledge and skills of the students.

She said home economics education was designed for all sound minds to acquire skills and knowledge to be able to help in disseminating information that would promote the awareness of healthy, sustainable lifestyles and to achieve optimal and sustainable living standards for the society.

Ms Kutum expressed the need for parents to encourage their children especially to have interest in Home Economics Education to obtain the requisite skills and knowledge to contribute meaningfully towards the realisation of healthy and sustainable lifestyle society.

She appealed to the media to use their platform to help sensitise the public on the significance of the Home Economics Profession, which was one potential in achieving societal transformation towards sustainable lifestyle.
