PMA calls for more measures to check exodus of nurses

Kumasi, May 14, GNA - The Private Midwives Association has called on the government to institute more effective and workable measures to help check the exodus of nurses and other paramedical personnel from the country.

Miss Victoria Mensah, the proprietor of the Queen Victoria Memorial Maternity Home in Kumasi, said even though the government had initiated some mechanisms to address the problem, they were not adequate enough to halt the migration of health personnel.

Miss Mensah, who was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi on Friday, advised medical personnel to make personal resolutions to stay back home and offer their services to the country. She said even though it was through the efforts of health personnel in both public and private establishments that quality health services were made available to people, those in the private sector seemed to be discriminated against when it comes to the issue of motivation.

''Just as public hospitals and health centres can be found in remote parts of the country so are private clinics and maternity homes are also located in difficult areas, all discharging similar services". Miss Mensah appealed to donors and the government to extend a fraction of any of its motivation packages intended for nurses to private midwives too.
