GNAT calls for roadmap for free SHS programme

Atronie (B/A), May 29, GNA - Mr Oppong Amoah, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT has called on the government to come out with plans for realistic implementation of the free senior High education in September.

He said a road map was required to show how the implementation of such a laudable educational policy would be in the supreme interest of the nation.

Mr Amoah made the call when he was speaking at a forum on quality education at Atronie in the Sunyani Municipality.

It was organised by the Brong-Ahafo Regional branch of the Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC), and attended by some teachers, students and other key players in the education sector.

Mr Amoah indicated that the smooth and successful implementation of the free SHS programme required active involvement of all major players in the education sector.

The implementation of the programme, he recommended could be piloted in poor communities in the meantime.

Mr Amoah said free, but quality education was what the Ghanaian child needed, and called on the government to remove the bottlenecks in public educational institutions that impeded quality education.

Madam Agatha Akyiah, the Assembly Woman for Atronie Electoral Area, expressed discomfort about the high level of indiscipline among students in the area.

She observed that absenteeism, disrespect and gross insubordination were traits demonstrated by students.
