Atronie, (B/A) May 27, GNA - A retired educationist on Friday called for urgent establishment of school monitoring committees to help improve the standard of education especially at the basic level.

Nana Boakye Yiadom, the Gyantuahene of Atronie in the Sunyani Municipality, who made the call underscored the need to monitor the teaching methodologies of teachers as well as check them against absenteeism.

Speaking at a public forum on improving education at Atronie, Nana Yiadom also appealed to parents to ensure that their children ate before going to school.

It was organised by the Brong-Ahafo Regional branch of the Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition, and attended by some teachers, students and other key players in the education sector.

Nana Yiadom expressed discomfort about the abysmal performance of students in the Basic Education Certificate Examination in the area.

He noted that the contributory factors could not be blamed on students alone.

He said the National School Feeding Programme must not be a yardstick for parents to deny their children breakfast before going to school.

Nana Yiadom said quality education required collaborative efforts hence the need for the establishment of the independent monitoring committee to complement the efforts of the school management committees and circuit supervisors.

He entreated parents and guardians to ensure effective partnership with teachers and school heads in the proper upbringing and development of their children and wards.

Mr Kobina Afena-Sam, the Regional Co-ordinator of the Coalition emphasised that promoting quality education involved all stakeholders in the education sector.

Speaking on the theme: "Delivering Free Quality Education for All in Ghana-what is the Roadmap,' the Co-ordinator advised teachers not to create any platform that would scare students.

Mr Afena-Sam said the capitation grant and the school feeding programme ought to be strengthened to benefit more children.
