Accra, May 26, GNA - Ghana will join the rest of the World to commemorate World No-Tobacco Day on May 31 2017 under the Theme, 'Tobacco, A Threat to Development'.

The World Health Assembly (WHA) has set aside May 31 every year to mark World No-Tobacco Day.

A statement signed by Dr Kyei-Faried S., the Deputy Director and Head Disease Control and Prevention Department of the Ghana Health Service and copied to the Ghana News Agency has indicated.

The statement said the Day was commemorated to raise awareness on the harmful effects of tobacco use and to encourage global action at curbing the tobacco epidemic.

The theme seeks to draw global attention to the threat posed by tobacco use to the sustainable development goals and call on governments, NGOs and CSOs to take action.

'It also seeks to educate the public about the manipulative tactics of the tobacco industry.

'We therefore call on all stakeholders to carry out activities that will mark the day, which will be launched by The Minister of Health,' the statement said.
