The Director of the Centre for Health Policy and Implementation Research of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Professor Margaret Gyapong, has been honoured with the General Electric (GE) Heroine of Global Health award.

The former Director of the Dodowa Health Research Centre was one of the 13 emerging women leaders in global healthcare who were awarded at the first ever ‘Heroine of Health’ honours organised as part of the World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland on Sunday.

The event was organised by GE Healthcare and Women in Global Health, a movement that strives for greater gender equality in global health leadership, committed to change the face of global health for the future and to help recognize, develop and grow women’s leadership.

One of the strategies aimed at achieving the goals and the aspirations of the movement is ‘sharing the stories of women leading the charge, and the award scheme epitomises that.

For over two decades, Prof Gyapong has worked extensively to develop and improve Operations/ Health Systems and Implementation research capacity among research teams in Ghana, Africa and Asia.

She has also worked closely with programme Implementers and policy makers in Ghana to ensure that her research leads into policy.

Underlying her work is a focus on championing women’s health and Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights.
