Police Cautions Public Against Fake Car Dealing Syndicate

The police administration has cautioned the general public against the activities of a fake car dealing syndicate across the country especially in Accra, Tema, Kumasi, Tarkwa, Sekondi-Takoradi and Obuasi.

In a statement the police to caution the public, the police disclosed that the modus operandi of the syndicate is to advertise vehicles for sale with their phone numbers both on vehicles and at online marketing sites including Tonaton, Checki.com, carmudi.com to lure unsuspecting buyers.

The statement further mentioned that when a potential buyer calls the advertised number to express interest, the supposed seller arranges to meet the buyer at a place where the vehicle is parked which is usually a fuel station, a workshop or by the roadside.

The potential buyer is given the opportunity to test drive and when negotiations are concluded, the seller opts to introduce the buyer a member of the syndicate who is tagged as an ‘owner’. The ‘owner’ after negotiations hands over particulars of the vehicle and ignition key opts to join the buyer to handover the vehicle to him and in the process they will run away with the car.

The statement underscored the need for the general public to be cautious in dealing with persons other than known dealerships who offer vehicles for cheaper prices adding that the public should report any suspicious act involving the sale and purchase of vehicles.
