New Juaben endorses President's nominee, whiles women groups pledge support

Koforidua, May 23, GNA - Madam Comfort Asante, a senior lecturer of the university of Cape Coast (UCC) has been endorsed as the New Juaben Municipal Chief Executive.

She pooled 77 votes out of 78 members who were present at a special assembly sitting on Wednesday.

Madam Asante, who was rejected in the first round last Monday, was overwhelmingly endorsed by the assembly members in an election conducted by the Electoral Commission.

She becomes the first woman Chief Executive for the Municipality.

The 65- year old lecturer holds a master of philosophy degree in Akan and other Ghanaian languages from UCC and a bachelor of education from the University of Education Winneba.

She is a former Women's Organiser of the NPP in the New Juaben North constituency.

In her acceptance speech, she pledged to be committed and devoted to the obligations and the duties of the office and called on all irrespective of background to support her to move the development of the assembly forward.

She thanked the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for the confidence reposed in her and the two Members of parliament in the municipality Nana Adjei Boateng and Dr Mark Asibey Yeboah and all others who had helped her through her political and private life to come that far.

The premises of the New Juaben assembly were thrown with into jubilation and merry making by a number of women groups in the Municipality who thronged the Assembly hall to witness the occasion.

Meanwhile, the Regional Women's Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Madam Evelyn Korang, who was at the ceremony said as the first Woman Chief Executive of the Municipality she would support Madam Asante to ensure that she succeeds in advancing the cause of development in the area.

She commended President Akufo-Addo, for nominating a woman to the position and advised Madam Asante to work hard so that people would justify the confidence reposed in her, to pave the way for more women to be appointed into positions to achieve gender balance.
