Kumasi, May 10, GNA - Reverend (Mrs) Charlotte Ampah of the Ayigya Circuit of the Methodist Church has stated that the Christian Council of Ghana would resist any attempt by the government to legalise prostitution.

She said members of the Council were convinced that it is only through intensive education that prostitution could be checked and not legalisation of the practice.

Rev Ampah was speaking at a programme organised by the Saint Paul's Catholic Church at Amakom in Kumasi as part of activities marking this year's Mother's Day celebration. It was under the theme, "Parents an d their Children" and was attended by women of the church.

She appealed to the government not to consider giving legal backing to prostitution but should evolve more sustainable programmes to educate people on the dangers of prostitution. "The country risks expediting the spread of HIV/AIDS if ever prostitution is legalised as many more people seeking easy means of earning a living will delve into its practice". 10 May 05
