NDC flagbearer race exciting because NPP is failing – Inusah Fuseini

Tamale Central Member of Parliament, Inusah Fuseini, is certain the four-month-old government of the New Patriotic Party is failing.

This failure, he believes, explains the excitement in the race for the elections 2020 presidential nomination of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Many NDC stalwarts are believed to be lacing their boots to challenge former president John Mahama for the presidential slot of the NDC.

Mr. Mahama failed miserably in his bid to secure a second term in the 2016 elections.

He earned the unenviable record as the first sitting president to lose an election.

His appointees are lining up and piling pressure on him to seek the party’s nomination for the 2020 presidential election.

Despite his family’s admonition that he should not seek any public office again, Mr. Mahama is certain to run.

So too are former Vice-Chancellor of the University for Professional Studies – Accra (UPSA), Prof. Joshua Alabi, former Trade Minister, Ekwow Spio-Grabrah, 2^nd Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, and former head of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Sylvester Mensah.

Posters of Mr. Bagbin, NDC MP for Nadowli-Kaleo, emerged this week generating loud media discussions.

His aides said the NDC urgently needs a break from the leadership that inflicted on it, its most embarrassing defeat since it was formed in 1992.

The party lost spectacularly in both the presidential and parliamentary elections last December.

Whilst conceding that it is too early for people to be jockeying for the flagbearer slot, the Tamale Central MP says the opposition party is upbeat about returning to power very soon.

He said members of the NDC had observed policy incoherence and backtracking on the part of the government which is proof that the “NPP might leave power so soon.”

NPP Communications Director, Nana Akomea who was also on the show scoffed at Mr. Fuseini's argument, insisting it was foolhardy for a party that suffered its biggest loss to be hoping to return to power very soon.

He said the Akufo-Addo government was on course to become the most successful government in a generation.

Nana Akomea advised the NDC to focus on rebuilding its structures and obtaining an understanding of why it performed so poorly at the polls.

The fact that the NDC lost heavily despite incumbency advantages and abuses should concern the party leadership.

He, however, believes Mr. Mahama has an edge over the other contenders in the NDC's race.
