Takoradi, May 1, GNA - The various worker's unions within the Western Region have called on government to help save the country's water bodies from the activities of illegal miners.
The workers carried placards with various inscriptions including: "Stop galamsey to save our cocoa farmers", and "Stop galamsey to preserve our water bodies".
Others issues of concern raised by the workers were the need to revamp the railway sector, reconstitution of the ECG and addressing the salary concerns of railway workers.
Brother Osman Abengo, Regional Secretary of the TUC, said May Day offered the public the avenue to remember the contribution of workers in the development of the country.
He said joblessness among the youth remains the greatest challenge facing the country.
Brother Abengo said there is the need to revitalize all the major sectors of the economy- agriculture, manufacturing, mining, quarrying, education and security among others to bring hope to the youth of the nation.
Dr Kwaku Afriyie, Western Regional Minister, said the labour market is the cornerstone of our development and government was working hard to consolidate the indicators of decent jobs which include opportunities for employment and income, rights at work places, social protection and dialogue.
He said government was concerned with the wanton destruction associated with illegal mining adding that due to the gravity of the situation government, through a well orchestrated plan, would sustain the campaign against the menace.
The Regional Minister commended workers for understanding the current situation and preparedness to help government implement policies for the general good of all.
Some trade unionists of the various unions were honoured for their meritorious service to the labour union.
Mr Solomon Asiedu, Chief Director of the Regional Coordinating Council, and Alhaji Asuru, Coordinator of the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, were among the award winners.
