President Nana Akufo-Addo has appointed Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa as the Acting Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES).

A letter signed by the President and sighted by Citi News, indicates that the appointment is pending the advice of the governing council of the Service in consultation with the Public Service Commission.

Prof. Opoku-Amankwa will be taking over from Mr. Jacob Kor who was appointed to the office two years ago.

      1. Leadership and Management

      As Dean of International Programmes

      • Handles all agreements involving KNUST and its collaborators or partners in respect of external academic programmes.
      • Custodian and Manager of database on KNUST's national and international collaborators and partners in respect of academic programmes.
      • Facilitated collaboration between KNUST and five French universities in a spate of three months of assuming office.
      • Constituted a committee to develop manual to guide KNUST staff and students exchange and mobility programmes.
      • Constituted a committee to develop guidelines for monitoring and evaluation of KNUST's collaboration and linkage programmes with national and international institutions in respect of academic matters.

      As Dean of Faculty

      • Provided leadership and direction to 80 faculty members, 112 senior and junior staff and 2500 students.
      • Ensured availability of resources and facilities for effective teaching and learning at all times.
      • Mentored and encouraged scholarship (research and publication) of faculty through training and workshops.
      • Organised the first ever residential retreat for 80 senior members of the Faculty of Art to discuss and develop a strategic plan for the Faculty.
      • Successfully organised six weeks workshop on “Practice/art-led research methodologies” for 80 senior members of the Faculty of Art.
      • Organised a workshop on “Assessment in higher education” to upgrade the skills of faculty in setting and marking questions.
      • Supported and encouraged three departments – Publishing Studies, Industrial Art, and Communication Design to develop proposal to run part programmes as a form of Internally Generated Funds (IGF).
      • Supported and mentored faculty in research and publications and successfully saw the promotion of number of staff.
      • Ensured swift submission of promotion documents of faculty and helped to increase number of senior lecturers from three to eleven and also moved four assistant lecturers to lecturers in a spate of two years.

      As Head of Department

      • Provided leadership to the Department and worked with other heads to deliver University strategic objectives.
      • Organised the teaching programme and maintained acceptable standard of teaching in the Department through training, continuous professional development programmes.
      • Set up and supervised two committees to revise the Department's undergraduate and graduate programmes.
      • Ensured effective administration and management of staff of 15 and student population of 500, resources and facilities.
      • Liaised with other departments, faculty and professional bodies – e.g. Ghana Book Development Council (GBDC), Ghana Book Publishers Association (GBPA), Ghana Printers and Paper Convertors Association (GPPCA) to provide support in kind and in cash to support the Department.
      1. Funds Mobilization
      • Chaired a committee of seven to successfully plan, organise and raise an amount of Two Million Ghana Cedis (GHc 2,000,000.00) as seed funds for the KNUST Foundation in a spate of five weeks.
      • Developed proposals to seek sponsorship for the KNUST excellence awards and dinner dance to raise average of GHc 50,000 in cash and in kind each year for five years, to support the KNUST excellence awards and dinner dance.
      • Led the Ghana Book Publishers Association to develop a proposal and raised Two Hundred Thousand Ghana Cedis GHc 200,000) from the BUSAC Funds, for research, training and advocacy in the book publishing industry.
      1. Coordination

      As Coordinator (Students Internship programme) 1999-2004:

      • Compiling list of potential publishing, printing houses for industrial attachment; posting students to industries; industrial visits to monitor students' progress; development of assessment criteria for industry to grade students; evaluate and report on student attachment programme.

      • Registration of courses; coordinating mid-semester and end of semester examinations; drawing up examination timetable; providing orientation on examination rules and regulations for students; processing of examination results; release of results.
