Opinion Threats Of Losing Elections Won't Stop Galamsey Fight- Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo
APR 27, 2017 LISTEN

Let me use this small platform to commend the President for this courageous statement and display of assertive leadership. This is the kind of courage we expect our leaders to exhibit to cure this canker of partisan bastardization. Before touch on the substantive issue, let me remind friends of same courageous, sincere and wise but politically dangerous statement the former President John Mahama made at the UCC forum weeks before the 2016 elections👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

"Onthe matter of trainee teacher allowances, better to lose on principle than win using falsehood. We'll not reverse the decision."

This expression of the former President's candid opinion was twisted and given mischievous interpretations by his critics including some of my friends who are today struggling to give same courageous statement by the current President,a nationalistic interpretation.

I was at that particular forum and heard clearly what former President Mahama hold his audience. Answering a question by one of the students,be explained that the policy to swap the allowance system with the students loan scheme was in line with the policy of placing all degree awarding institutions under the students loan scheme and was introduced to increase admission of trainees into various training colleges.Currently in America, the new administration has taken certain strategic decisions such as reduction of allowances paid to colleges and funds to the schools something similar to what the previous administration introduced but the flagbearer of the Npp for the 2016 elections reacting to what the sitting president said, told the people of the Northern Region that he will restore the allowance should he win power. Section of the media working of surrogates of the opposition party, twisted what President Mahama said just to incite the students against the NDC.

Those who have been following happenings on the global political stage would realise that voters in the developed nations are moving away from always voting for the career politicians and their known traditional parties and settling on technocrats and principled candidates. This what we must adopt to end the deceits and inconsistencies we see after every election. We must vote for leaders who are ready to sacrifice power for our general good, leaders who are ready to implement and defend prudent but tough policies without looking at their political dangers, leaders who are ready to sacrifice their second term for real development.

The statement made by the sitting President when in opposition👇🏻👇👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

Sharply contradicts his position today but for the sake of national cohesion to fight this canker called "galamsey", we must forgive him but must be a great lesson to all politicians.

The reason why I am commending the sitting President is because of the importance of assertiveness in our daily lives and the divine truth that we can get things done if we are assertive. In dealing with the citizenry and even your party supporters, you may see some as being helpful and cooperative but at the same time may have some who may not be easy to convince it will only take assertiveness for a leader to get his policies through. At times we interpret assertiveness as rudeness and that was how section of the media succeeded in portraying the former President when he calmly expressed his sincerest position on the allowance issue.

I hope the President will live by his own words by ensuring that these hoodlums hiding behind political threats to perpetuate this heinous crime are made to face the laws and also offer the operatives embarking on this operation to do their work without unnecessary obstruction and intimidation.
