Accra, April 25, GNA - Mr Augustine Saakuur-Karbo, the General Secretary of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), on Monday urged Public and Civil Servants to embrace government's policy on Planting for Food and Jobs by undertaking small scale farming.

He, however, appealed to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to create a unit at their district, regional, and national offices where workers could secure improved seeds and day old chicks to undertake the venture.

Mr Saakuur-Karbo, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra, said if workers embarked on this project it would increase the national food basket and workers would get additional income to enhance their livelihood.

He said workers could use their leave days for the project to spend more time on their farms and work vigorously to catch-up with the planting season.

Mr Saakuur-Karbo said those who could not secure agricultural inputs should be supplied by government on credit to be deducted from their salaries.

He said TEWU, as part of its contribution, would whip up the enthusiasm of members of the union by sensitising them on the importance of the policy.
