Accra, April 22, GNA - The residents of the La-Nkwantanang Madina Municipality have been urged to embrace the half-price toilet facility being provided by the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area-Sanitation Water Project (GAMA-SWP), to stem open defecation.

Apart from stemming open defecation, the project would also improve water supply to households which would go a long way in avoiding cholera and other related diseases.

Mr Jonathan Aboagye, an official of the Social Accountability Unit of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development gave the advice at a forum organised by the GAMA-SWP of the La-Nkwantanang Madina Municipal Assembly (La-NMMA), to sensitise residents on the project.

The GAMA-SWP is promoting the provision of institutional and household toilet facilities at half-price and improved water supply in the 11 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in Accra and is being sponsored by the World Bank.

Mr Aboabye said it was a disgrace that Ghana was rated second in open defecation in Africa and 7th in the world and that it was about time Ghanaians took advantage of the project to own household toilets to stop the indiscriminate open defecation.

'We should bow our heads in shame. It is a bad name to be rated second in free-range defecation in Africa,' he said.

Madam Cynthia Bonsah, the Senior Development Planning Officer of La-NMMA, and GAMA Project Coordinator took the participants through the components of the GAMA-SWP.

She said about 70 per cent of households in La-NMMA had shown interest in the project, but still felt the cost was on the high side, an issue that was being discussed.

She urged the residents to change their unhygienic conditions towards the environment to make it safe.

Some of the participants who spoke to the Ghana News Agency expressed disgust at the way some households around schools threw human excreta in polythene bags into classrooms in the night.

They appealed to the La-NMMA to improve on some of the toilet facilities in the schools.
