YPI-Ghana Launches Anti Teenage Pregnancy Campaign

Young People's Initiative-Ghana on Friday 31st March, 2017 launched an Anti Teenage Pregnancy Campaign at Akyem Atuntunmirem in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

The purpose of the campaign was to inspire school going children to focus on their education and not engage in pre-marital sex. It was also aimed to motivate victims of teenage mothers to be educated in both formal or informal education.

Presenting a speech on behalf of the Birim South District Director of education, Madam Elizabeth Nii Boye, charged the teenage girls to refrain from any acts which will lead to teenage pregnancy. She also inspired the participants on how educated females are contributing immensely to the development of their country like the Electoral Commission chairperson Madam Charlotte Osei, CEO of Airtel Ghana Lucy Quist, Ms Joyce Aryee former CEO of Ghana Chamber of Commerce, Dr. Gifty Anti, Ministers of state such as Hon. Otiko Afisa Djaba, Hon.Catherine Ablema Afeku, Hon. Abena Osei Asare, and many more.

Mrs. Boye also advised the teenage mothers not to let early pregnancy blight their future.

The Public Health Officer at the Birim South District Madam Comfort Selby also admonished the teenage girls to refrain from premarital sex. She decried the escalating number of reported cases of teenage pregnancies in the district and cautioned all parent to be extra vigilant on their teenage girls.

Madam Comfort further pleaded with parent to provide their female wards with some basic needs especially when they are being ushering into womanhood. She insisted on parents not to countenance with the jovial living of some men calling their teenage girls as 'my wife' and should not also try to betroth their teenage girls to them.

Akosua Ntiriwaa Anti, President of YPI-Ghana, adviced school going children to exercise patience and take their studies seriously. She urged them to sacrifice their time by learning ambitiously today and enjoy the benefits tomorrow. The president also warn them to desist from bad friends in their society and cautioned parents to always encourage their children positively in all their doings and to improve upon the relationship between them and their teenage girls.

The program which was climaxed by a drama display was highly witnessed by the chief and Elders of Akyem Atuntunmirem, Assembly Member of the area , Parents, teachers and pupils of Atuntunmirem presby school, members of YPI-GHANA, invited guest and the general public and sponsored by Herald Foundation, Rural Health Ghana and Remex communication.
