Accra, April 13, GNA - The Ministerial Advisory Board of the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI) was on Thursday inaugurated to advice the sector minister on policy direction, planning objectives and operational strategies.

The 12-member Board, chaired by Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, the Sector Minister, is mandated, under the Civil Service Act 1993 (PNDCL 327), to promote constant interaction between the Ministry and the users of its services, and to advise the Minister on adjustments in policy direction, planning objectives and operational strategies.

Members of the Board included Ms Patricia Appiagyei, Deputy Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Madam Salimata Abdul-Salam, Chief Director of MESTI, Dr Victor Agyeman, Director-General of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, and Mr John Pwamang, Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Others are Professor Benjamin Jabez B. Nyarko, the Director General of Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, Prof. Samuel Kwame Offei, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, University of Ghana, Mr Lawrence Zineh Dakurah, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority, formerly Town and Country Planning and Dr Lena Dzifa Mensah of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

The rest are Mr Matthew A. Adambire of the Ghana Institution of Engineers, and Mr Alfred Kwesi Opoku, President of the Institute of Planners, and a Representative of the Private Enterprises Foundation.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng urged the members of the Board to help the Ministry to succeed in preserving the environment to the benefit of all Ghanaians.

Prof Offei, on behalf of the members, pledged their determination to help the Minister succeed by making important contributions towards policy.

He said since the environment was a critical issue for everybody, especially with challenges like illegal mining (galamsey), the Board would work together with the Ministry to ensure that the land, water bodies and forest were protected.

The Board is expected to meet on quarterly basis aside emergency meeting days to deliberate on issues arising.
