Offinso (Ash), April 27, GNA - The Offinso District Assembly is to privatise its revenue collection to generate more funds, Mr Abdulai Zakaria, the District's Co-ordinating Director has said.

To ensure the attainment of the objective, he said, a seven-member committee has been put in place to come up with modalities and when approved by the assembly it will come into operation.

Mr Zakaria was speaking on the topic "The District Assembly Concept, a Catalyst for Development", at the launch of a weeklong programme of the district's celebration of the fifth Constitution Week at Offinso on Tuesday.

The programme, which was under the theme "Reducing Poverty Through Citizens Participation in Local Governance", was organised by the Offinso Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE).

He said the assembly had wanted to use the area councils in the mobilisation of funds but that did not work because of lack of motivation.

Mr Zakaria called for political commitment and total decentralisation of the district assemblies to enable them operate to enhance good governance.

He stressed the need for sustainable public education to support information flow of government policies and programmes at all levels. Mr Kwaku Appiah-Kagya, Offinso District Director of the NCCE, said the weeklong programme would involve public forums, durbars, seminars and workshops.

He appealed to the government to provide the Commission with the necessary logistic support to enhance the performance of its duties.
