Accra, April 1, GNA — The Accra Metropolitan Public Health Department (MPHD) of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), has held a health awareness workshop for selected coconut vendors from the Osu Klottey Electoral Area.

The workshop was held to create awareness among the coconut vendors on the need to ensure a hygienic environment in their daily activities.

Participants at the workshop were taken through various activities including proper care and handling of cutlasses, avoiding contamination of products, and the hygienic way of selling coconut.

Mr Joseph Annan, a resource person at the workshop, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the AMA was confronted with grave sanitation concerns as many hawkers have limited understanding on how and the need to ensure a healthy environment.

He said the concern is worsened as some coconut vendors dump their waste products into the drains hence the hence the workshop to sensitise them on the need to be conscious about their activities in the environment.

Mr Annan said the AMA would continue in its efforts to raise awareness on food safety issues in the markets and appealed to the all hawker vendor to desist from dumping their waste in unapproved areas.

Mr Immanuel Nartey-Tokoli, Managing Director of Jekora Ventures, a waste management company, promised to place refuse containers at some various locations for coconut sellers to dump their waste for quick disposal to the landfill sites.

There is the need to appear neat at all times, he said, and pledged to provide the coconut sellers with aprons, T-Shirts and help in re-branding their stands to attract more clients.
