Kumasi, Mar 28, GNA - Vice-President Alhaji Dr. Mahammudu Bawumia has promised to put the common good - the overriding interest of the people at the centre of the government's thinking and actions.

It was passionate about building a nation that was going to work for every Ghanaian.

He was speaking at the 49th annual 'Maulud', a commemoration of the birth of Prophet Mohammed, the Founder of Islam, at a ceremony held in Kumasi.

It was organized under the theme; 'Nation building after successful elections - the role of the Tijanniya sect'.

The event was attended by Islamic scholars from both within and outside the country and members of the sect.

Vice President Bawumia made reference to the creation of the Inner City and Zongo Development Ministry and said it should signal to everybody the determination to transform the living conditions of the people in the Zongo communities.

This, he said, must be seen as a strong statement by the government to fight poverty.

He rallied the people to give rock solid backing to the government, as it vigorously worked to fix the economy, restore it to good health to make things better.

He reminded them about the need for tolerance and to reject violence and extremism.

He used the occasion to say thank you to people in the Zongo communities for voting massively to bring the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to power and said they would keep faith with them.

Alhaji Ahmed Zakaria, an Islamic Scholar, urged Muslims to remain unwavering in their faith in Allah and to keep to the teachings of the Holy Prophet.

The celebration was marked with recitations of the Holy Quran.
