Staff from the MTN Ghana Foundation, sponsor of the new 40-bed Maternity Block visited the Tema General hospital to monitor progress of the project which was being awarded to a construction firm called Brushwell Associates Limited commenced operation on 9th November 2016.

The project, which is 33 percent of completion is expected to be completed in September this year.

The Executive Director of MTN Ghana Foundation, Mrs. Cynthia Lumor said it is the hope of management of MTN Ghana that the facility will bring relief to many expectant mothers and staff of the Tema General Hospital when the project is finally completed and commissioned.

Mrs. Lumor noted that the facility will include a 20 bed 1st stage ward, a 20 bed lying-in ward, one theater, 7 bed monitoring/recovery ward, Nurses station and changing rooms, sluice rooms, pantry and store, 2 consulting rooms, nurses office and nurses restroom.

She indicated that MTN Ghana Foundation has over the years placed critical focus on maternal healthcare and the general wellbeing of women.

Mrs. Lumor added that in this regard, the Foundation has constructed and commissioned several projects aimed at improving maternal and child mortality across the country.

Some of the projects, according to her, include a 40-bed Neo-natal Center for the Tamale Teaching Hospital in the Northern Region and the construction of a 20-bed maternity block fully furnished with medical equipment and furniture for the Ejisu Government in the Ashanti Region.

“We will continue to support development initiatives in Ghana. As part of our 20th anniversary legacy CSI projects we have an oil palm project in Juaso and scholarship programme that will benefit 300 children all over Ghana,” she stated.

Dr. Kwamena Opoku-Adusei, Medical Director of the Tema General Hospital commended MTN Ghana Foundation for keeping their promise and ensuring that the project is completed on schedule.

He emphasized that the project is likely to be completed even before schedule because of the massive commitment of time and resources by MTN Ghana Foundation.

Dr. Opoku-Adusei indicated that the facility, when completed will improve on the quality of service delivery in the hospital.
