Disability Federation Pushes For Ntim Twumasi Kwaku For Ejisu MCE
25.03.2017 LISTEN

Disability advocacy group, the Ghana Society for the Physically Disabled (GSPD) has made a passionate appeal to the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to give a thoughtful consideration to the appointment of persons with disability into the positions of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDCEs).

The group has in the interim made a strong case for the NTK Ventures business magnate Mr. Ntim Twumasi Kwaku and Mr. Obeng Martin for the position of MCE of Ejisu Juaben and Sunyani West respectively to be considered by the President for the appointment.

The group cites the two for their stature in society, their immense contribution to the operations of the disability front and the roles they played within the 2016 campaigning season.

“Fortunately, these bold members, Mr. Ntim Twumasi Kwaku- Ejisu-Juaben Municipal and Mr. Obeng Martin- Sunyani West, have expressed interest and have successfully undergone vetting at the Flagstaff House.”

“These two members are very hardworking members in the association and in the NPP,” the group in a statement stated.

This will not be the first time the disability front has appealed to have some considerable representation both in central government and in the local assemblies.

The Ghana federation for the disabled has submitted a petition to the ministry of gender, children and social protection to pass a bill for an affirmative action that secures a quota of ten percent (10%) of all ministerial appointments to be reserved for persons with disabilities.

The federation further wants twenty percent (20%) of all government appointments to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to go to the disabled and one representative on all boards of public institutions and agencies.

Below is the statement:
The Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled (GSPD) wishes to appeal to His Excellency, President Nana Akufo Addo to consider Persons with Disability in his ongoing MMDCEs appointments.

Chapter twenty of the 1992 constitution of Ghana place emphasis on “System of local governance and administration which shall, as far as practicable, be decentralized”. Section 243 of the Constitution states that” There shall be a District Chief Executive for every district who shall be appointed by the President with prior approval of not less than two-thirds majority members of the assembly present and voting at the meeting”.

This release is a follow up to our earlier release asking the President to include PWDs in his governance and also to add our voice to the call of our umbrella organization Ghana Federation of Disabled Organizations (GFD).

Fortunately, these bold members, Mr. Ntim Twumasi Kwaku- Ejisu-Juaben Municipal and Mr. Obeng Martin- Sunyani West, have expressed interest and have successfully undergone vetting at the Flagstaff House.

These two members are very hardworking members in the association and in the NPP.

There are estimated 5 million PWDs in Ghana with a population of 28million. Out of 216 MMDCEs required, only two have the chance to be part and for that matter, they cannot be denied.

We are appealing to the President to:
1. Consider Mr. Ntim Twumasi Kwaku and Mr. Obeng Martin for the position of MCE of Ejisu Juaben and Sunyani West respectively which has come to our notice and others which we are yet to know for the All Inclusiveness to be realized in your governance.
