MAR 22, 2017 LISTEN

The Ghana Water Company Limited in the Eastern Region, has threatened to disconnect water supply to all senior high schools and public tertiary institutions in the region.

Information gathered by Citi News indicates that, all Senior high schools and public tertiary institutions in the region are in debt to the Ghana Water Company Limited as far back as the year 2014.

The Eastern Regional Chief Manager of Ghana Water Company Limited, Philip Dwamena Boateng in an interview with Citi News said all schools in the region are in breach of contract of service.

“They owe the Ghana Water Company huge sums of money, I mean millions of Ghana cedis and this is affecting our operations and crippling our distribution.”

He continued that, “the government in 2014 decided to pay for some time, but in January 2014, the schools were asked again to pay. But as of now, we have not received any circular from the government or the Ministry to that effect. The schools bill the students for water, but have failed to make payments to us, they pay electricity because it is pre-paid.”

Mr. Philip Dwamena Boateng added that, the company has served notice of disconnection letters to all the schools including the Koforidua Technical University to make payments within two weeks.

“The schools are all aware of this, I have been visiting them all the time, informing them that they have to pay, we have also issued them with notice of disconnection so they are really aware.”

He further stated that, the Ghana water company through their lawyers are ready to sit down with the schools for conditions and terms of payment.
